The Carquinez Regional Environmental Education Center (CREEC) is an all-volunteer, public interest charity that works with students and under-served youth in the communities that line the Carquinez Street, the body of water connecting the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta with San Francisco Bay. Some of our youth-involved projects include:
• Restoring riparian habitats along the Carquinez watershed, one of California’s most vital wildlife migratory corridors. In former monarch butterfly breeding habitats, non-native plants and tress are being replaced with native varieties to support the butterfly population.
• Maintaining the nation’s first student-run monarch butterfly nursery, in which monarchs are raised, tagged and released into newly-created sanctuaries.
• Teaching elementary, middle school and high school students about the environment and the role of the Strait for the future of Bay Area wildlife. For more information, see http://www.creecyouth.org/blog/.
