Scene on the Strait is one of California’s leading plein air art festivals. It showcases the work of some of the best landscape painters in the state. Not only that, many artists will be on hand to chat with people in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
We welcome you to join us at the event, and here’s what you need to know when you come:
WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
WHERE: Martinez Regional Shoreline, Martinez. A beautiful parkland setting close to the shores of the Carquinez Strait.
DIRECTIONS: If you’re coming from the south (Walnut Creek area), take I-680 to Martinez and the Marina Vista exit. Turn left on Marina Vista and follow it to Ferry Street in downtown Martinez. Turn right on Ferry Street into Martinez Regional Shoreline and watch for our signs. If you’re coming from the north (Benicia area), the Marina Vista exit may be temporarily closed due to highway repairs. In this case take the Pacheco Boulevard exit and head back to Martinez.
PARTICIPATING ARTISTS WHO ARE SCHEDULED TO BE ON SITE THAT DAY: Rolando Barrero, Loralee Chapleau, Suzanne D’Arcy, Erin Dertner, Don Eagling, Catherine Erickson, Mary Fassbinder, John Finger, Jack Garasky, Geri Keary, Micaela Marsden, Chris Newhard, Teresa Onoda, Nancy Roberts, Wendy Rogers, Robert Sandidge, Tom Taneyhill, Gregory Vasgerdsian and Norma Webb.
ARTISTS WHO CANNOT BE THERE IN PERSON BUT WHO WILL BE SHOWING THEIR WORK: Nikki Basch-Davis, Kevin Courter, Timothy Horn, Bryan Mark Taylor and Jerrold Turner.
SPECIAL FEATURES: Nearly 20 artists on site, talking with patrons in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. There may be a live model present for those painters who wish to paint. Special auctions offer fantastic prices. In addition to the many larger pieces, more than 100 pieces of “miniature art” (paintings no bigger than 64″ square) will be on sale. All the artists participating in the show, including those who will not be there in person, will be showing their miniatures.
FOOD AND DRINKS: Yes! Authentic Mexican food will be available, as will wine, beer and other beverages. Live music will be provided by last year’s hit with audiences, One Mile Band.
OUR MISSION: The sale of paintings at Scene on the Strait supports the Carquinez Regional Environmental Education Center (CREEC), a nonprofit environmental group that employs underserved young people to restore habitat and raise Monarch butterflies for release into the Carquinez Strait area. Since the first Scene on the Strait in 1996, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised to help these young people and to help butterflies flourish again in what was once a huge butterfly area.

A HUGE THANK YOU: Many thanks to our sponsors: Shell Oil, Conoco Phillips, Allied Waste Services, Southern Wine & Spirits, Contra Costa Newspapers, CMCS/Central Valley Party and One Mile Band. Please support them because without their generous contributions, Scene on the Strait would not be possible.
ANOTHER HUGE THANK YOU: To our incredible volunteers. Ditto what we said about our sponsors. Our volunteers make all of this possible.
GUARANTEED: A good time. Come on out Aug. 8 and support the arts and the environment in a gorgeous parkland setting near the water.
